CEREMONIAL CACAO – an intense experience and a spiritual awakening
What is ceremonial cacao and how is it different from regular cacao?
Botanically speaking, the cacao tree bears fruit (a berry, in fact!) which contains cacao beans inside.
Ceremonial Cacao, however, comes from unprocessed, full-fat beans from heirloom cacao varieties that have undergone gentle fermentation. Unlike beans grown for industrial chocolate, ceremonial cacao beans are given time to grow naturally and slowly. Beans intended for mass production are often modified to grow quickly and reach larger sizes (ceremonial cacao beans are small).
For our shop, we select beans from permaculture farms, meaning they grow in harmony with other plants. This makes production more expensive, but the result is a deeper, richer taste.
What are the health benefits of ceremonial cacao?
Raw cacao is a true superfood! These small beans are packed with incredible nutrients:
- Anandamides – the “bliss molecules” naturally present in our body. A lack of them can lower mood. Cacao supports balance and calmness.
- Theobromine – gently energizing, like caffeine but milder. It provides steady energy, lowers blood pressure, has anti-inflammatory effects, and supports better sleep.
- Phenylethylamine & tryptophan – boost mood, improve memory, and support cognitive function.
- Antioxidants (flavonoids) – protect cells from free radicals, slow aging, and support immunity. They also have anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties.
- Minerals & vitamins – rich in magnesium, iron, potassium, and zinc, making it especially valuable for vegetarians, vegans, and people with anemia.
Magnesium in cacao is highly bioavailable – it reduces stress, stabilizes blood pressure, supports the nervous system, and has antidepressant effects.
How is ceremonial cacao made?
Ceremonial cacao grows on permaculture farms. After harvesting, the beans are:
- Fermented,
- Dried in the sun (to loosen the shells),
- Stone-ground at low temperatures into a pure, unrefined paste.
The paste is never defatted or processed further – preserving all its natural benefits.
Is your cacao organic?
Yes. Our cacao carries the European Organic Certificate. It comes from regenerative farms that prioritize biodiversity, soil health, and ecosystem renewal.
How much should I use the first time?
- Beginners: about 30g per cup.
- Experienced drinkers: 40-50g per cup.
When is the best time to drink ceremonial cacao?
In the morning, on an empty stomach – to fully experience its effects.
If you practice yoga, meditation, or other rituals in the morning, cacao is a perfect companion. It helps “open” the heart and deepen awareness.
It can also be enjoyed during the day as a nourishing alternative to coffee.
Can I drink more than one cup per day?
Cacao is rich and filling. But if your body asks for more, listen to it – another cup is perfectly fine.
Can children drink ceremonial cacao?
Yes, in small amounts (10–15g). Because it’s energizing, avoid giving it in the evening.
Can pregnant women drink ceremonial cacao?
Often yes, but always start with small amounts (around 10g) and notice how you and your baby feel. When in doubt, consult your doctor.
How much milk should I add, and which kind?
Try 50-300/400 ml of your favorite plant-based milk, adjusting the thickness to your taste. Avoid cow’s milk and refined sugar, as they reduce cacao’s benefits.
How can I sweeten ceremonial cacao?
If it feels too bitter, use natural sweeteners like honey or agave syrup. Avoid refined sugar.
Does ceremonial cacao contain caffeine?
It contains very little caffeine but plenty of theobromine, which lifts energy gently and steadily – without the crash that coffee can cause.
Can cacao replace coffee?
Yes! It doesn’t cause dependency, and many people successfully switch from coffee to cacao.
Does cacao cause constipation?
No – quite the opposite. Thanks to its bitter properties, it supports digestion and elimination.
How long can raw cacao be stored?
A long time 😊 Thanks to its natural fat content (which acts as a preservative), it stays fresh for many months in a sealed container.
Can ceremonial cacao support meditation or spiritual practice?
Absolutely. Cacao is known to “melt” and “open” the heart, bringing access to deep emotions and inner clarity.
It also improves focus, making it an ideal ally for meditation, dance, yoga, or other inward practices.
For the best effect, drink it in the morning on an empty stomach, and give yourself at least 30 minutes afterward to connect with yourself.
Cacao can be a profound spiritual tool. Even if you don’t approach it spiritually, it’s worth honoring the spirit of the plant with respect.
Can I combine cacao with herbs or other superfoods?
Yes. On its own it’s already a superfood, but it pairs beautifully with plants like Bobinsana.
Is ceremonial cacao safe for people with high blood pressure?
Start with a small portion (10g) and monitor how you feel. Increase slowly if it suits you. Always check with your doctor if unsure.
Any contraindications?
If you’re taking strong antidepressant medication, consult your doctor before drinking cacao.
